In order to diffuse tension and further clarify law between state and federal law regarding marijuana, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold its first marijuana legalization Senate hearing. As states such as Colorado and Washington continue to regulate and practice legal marijuana distribution and almost 20 other states push for medicinal legalization, marijuana law must be further developed. An issue rose among states as about 750,000 nonviolent "criminals" had been arrested for possession in 2011 (last recorded year) alone. However, today the issue focuses more on the untapped, un-taxed multi-billion dollar marijuana black market. Senator John McCain recently came out to the pres as a supporter of "the will of people" which included rights to cannabis which seemingly got the republican party to ease their stance on the matter. As several college facilities further research the cannabis plant and its effect, the pro-cannabis argument, that prohibition of marijuana contributes to government expenses and organized crime while keeping a harmless medicine out of the peoples hand, grows.
In my opinion, cannabis could easily be regulated as alcohol is and benefit not only the government, but the non-violent "criminals" that make up a large portion of the American people. I find it ridiculous that cancer patients from all around the nation have to commute to states such as California to use marijuana medicinally. As research continues, discovered information proves marijuana to be less addictive, less harmful, and less dangerous than many regularly prescribed painkillers and even alcohol. Prohibition of alcohol was catastrophically detrimental to the health of Americans as an unsanitary, dangerous black market formed to supply crude alcohol to Americans. The black market created by the prohibition of alcohol was a spec of dust juxtapose to the colossal organized crime that is the cannabis industry in America. In the states that legalized the plant, illegal interaction between the Mexican cartel and local unauthorized growers have dramatically decreased as the regulated facilities have provided a legal, stress free way to receive high quality cannabis for medicinal or recreational use. I believe that the plant is being legalized in many states for a reason and that time is the factor keeping the benefits of cannabis from spreading.
