President Gains McCain's Backing On Syria Attack-Melissa Kurtzman, 2nd Period

Summary: Senator John McCain, a Republican from Arizona, pledged his support to President Obama in his efforts to get Congress' approval for US military action in Syria. MCain said that even though he and Obama, along with South Carolina Congressman Lindsey Graham, all agreed that action in Syria was necessary, "the devil is in the details". The congressional vote is going to be tough since some oppose any military action altogether. Obama was originally planning on launching some sort of strike over the weekend, but decided to postpone it and seek Congressional authorization first. So far, France has been the only nation to offer rigorous support to America about military action. Last week, Britain held an emergency Parliament meeting and decided against a military attack. Russia seems to be ignoring the evidence that the Syrian army has been using chemical weapons. Israeli President Shimon Peres is supporting Obama's decision to seek Congress' authorization before taking any action.

Analysis: I think that the crisis in Syria is a very touchy subject right now. What is interesting to me is that this uprising initially started as part of the Arab Spring and has been going on for over two years, but only now that there is evidence of chemical weapons the United States is willing to help. I'm not necessarily opposed to the US stepping in, but I think the process has to be carefully thought out and planned before doing anything. I also like how Obama decided to postpone the initial strike and get Congress' authorization instead of using his presidential power to go ahead with everything without any other opinions. It'll be interesting to see what happens with the vote in Congress this week.
