"Obama gambles on getting Congress to green-light war with Syria" - Emily Gray 5th period

Summary : The title of this article is, "Obama gambles on getting Congress to green-light war with Syria" by Olivier Knox on August 31, 2013. The main gist of this article is that Obama wants to go to war with Syria due to a risk of terrorist and chemical warfare found in this country. Many citizens have opposed this idea due to the war in Iraq we have already dug our selves into and the events of 9/11. Obama must get congress approval before going threw with this plan and many have doubted him but he has proposed to congress that he would "Hammer home the potential threat to staunch ally Israel’s security" and "provide detailed intelligence about the alleged attack."

Analysis: Olivier Knox, who wrote this article, was trying to inform the people on what Obama was trying to do and how it was for the greater good of the people. The main idea of this article is Obama trying to persuade Congress so he can proceed with the Syrian war. I think that this article is important because it informs people about war and foreign affairs happening with the United States. People are still shaken and worried about what happened with Iraq and the terrorist in 9/11 and they are worried that something like that might happen again. People are afraid of another war surging and there being another terrorist attack. These people want to ensure that nothing will happen like that again and their safety isn't being put on the line.

  1. Felicia Padilla 5th period: I can see why many Americans would oppose going to war with Syria since it is a great risk to the security of our country. Another big factor is that Syria has actually claimed that they will fight back against any American forces which poses a greater risk to the success of our intervention.

  2. I'm not really sure how I feel about the proposed war but I like how Obama is following constitutional laws unlike in the past when presidents have gone over congress by bending the constitution.

  3. @Jack: indeed. G.W. Bush did not hesitate to exercise to the fullest extent--and then some--his executive rights as commander-in-chief. As well, the Bush administration went to war based on mere suspicion of possible nuclear weaponry overseas. The Syrian conflict presents a clearer image of what's going on. It very much appears that the question isn't "are they or aren't they," but rather, "should we or shouldn't we?"
