2 Men Bitten by Sharks off Florida Coast

According to the CNN article written by Janet DiGiacomo and Greg Botelho on September 8, 2013, two men have been bitten by sharks off of the Florida Coast. These men, one 20 and the other 40 were taken to a “nearby Bert Fish Medical Center for treatment of what authorities described as nonlife-threatening injuries.” They were not the only two people who have been bitten by sharks. More than 100 people have been attacked in the past 12 years, most of which have occurred off the Florida coast.

Even though “the fatality rate in the United States is just 2%.”, I feel like the Florida Coast should take more precautionary steps to ensure the safety of the people. In addition people should take some responsibility for themselves and realize that it is natural for wild animals, like sharks, to populate their natural habitats. One way to track shark populations and make an informed and safe decision to avoid waters that may be infested with sharks is to use websites like sharktracker.com that track shark migration throughout a calendar year.

  1. I had no idea there were websites that tracked sharks! If I ever go to the beach i will definitely use them. Thanks for sharing.

  2. From personal experience in living in Florida, most shark attacks occur when people decide to go into restricted zones or too far out in the ocean, which there are warnings and signs to prevent this from happening. Most of the time its people not going by the safety rules of the beach.

  3. Sharks have been nearing the shores more and more lately, and its kind of a scary thing. Though many people do tend to go past restricted areas, the sharks are coming closer. There are also many stereotypes against sharks though and many times and the human not taking enough precautions.

  4. People really must take precaution even with new websites. They should pass the restricted areas and should watch out themselves. These cases may not be heard often but should be given as much precaution as anything else.

  5. This website is definitely very useful for people who live in coastal regions. But I do agree that people should still be careful in the ocean and take precautions.
