There was a fight at a Houston High School that killed one person and injured three people. The one killed was a seventeen year old junior who was stabbed by an unknown weapon. The police are assuming it was a gang related fight. “Every parent sends their child to school believing that school should be one of the safe-haven places, a place where they can send them and receive them back at the end of the day.” Some schools like our school has security to prevent fights or shootings and lately there hasn't been much security at other schools. For example the massive shooting at the elementary school Sandy Hook, there probably wasn't enough cameras or security around to stop the shooters. The Houston High School should try to invest in cameras and more security around the school.

Wow. That's actually really sad to think that some poor kid our age, in the same place we are in life now, got shot over something as unimportant as gang violence. I agree more security would be a great idea but I feel like other actions and precautions should also be taken to prevent stuff like this.-Jasmine Easter
ReplyDeleteSecurity and cameras won't prevent school killings. If someone really wants to kill another it will happen. I agree this is a sad occasion in the world, however it is by far a rare occurrence. We should all learn how to stop letting things get to us to the point where we want to kill. Then and only then will it stop. But for that young boy, I am not completely sad. He won't have to live one more day in pain sorrow or misery. He fulfilled his purpose and has moved on to greater things. So think of it that way. But my heart does go out to those grieving, may his soul rest in peace. Nasya King
ReplyDeleteThat's devastating, however, I think that the right way to handle it would be going to the source, not trying to prevent the problem. I mean that they need to talk to their students, interact with them on more of a counselor level where you can understand and sympathize with them and help them to understand the depth of their actions. That's not saying I don't think there should be security at all, just that it would end up being more meaningful to the lives of the students if we were to engage them in a way that shows them that this isn't right in ANY way, shape, or form. May he rest in peace.

I agree with Nasya, security will not prevent 100% of fights. It will help, but in the end if someone really wants to do something, they're going to find a way to do it. This is a horrible story. I'm glad that our school is a safe place, but sometimes I wonder if things like what happened at Houston high School or Sandy Hook could happen to schools in the Dallas area. I do believe action needs to be taken to avoid these horrific things, but I am not so sure that security cameras alone is the answer. Ilana Lemack
ReplyDeleteIt's unfortunate that this happened but I agree with everyone else. I don't think better security would be the answer. I think something has to change within the student body to prevent these fights. And maybe after a devastating event like this, people will begin to realize that this is not right.
ReplyDeleteVery sad.. I wish we could find a way to keep violence like this out of the world because it is so sad when a young person dies, who has barely even lived his life.. I think we might have to do a little more to protect the young people than just having security cameras..
