Madison Ceurter 5th period: Girl's Suicide Points to Rise in Apps Used by Cyperbullies

A 12-year-old girl named Rebecca Ann Sedwick from Miami, Florida committed suicide by jumping off a cement plant.  Rebecca had been bullied online from the app Kik.  She had been bullied at her old middle school and her mother put Rebecca in a hospital and took her phone away.  The mother said that it worked for a little while because she started going to a different middle school and was auditioning for choir and was going to try out to be a cheerleader.  But then Rebecca started to go on Kik, ask.fm, and Voxer and the bullying started again.  Someone sent Rebecca a message saying "Can u die please?" and she responded with "Nope but I can live." I don't understand why people bully other people to the point to make someone want to kill themselves.  Saying "Can u die please?" is not okay.  Does that person even know what they are saying or are they just doing it to be cool?  Kids need to stop using Kik and ask.fm because it isn't safe and it can lead to bad things like kids committing suicide.

  1. That saddens me deeply. For such to occur is unacceptable and great change is needed in order to prevent such tragedies in the future. I wonder, do Kik and ask.fm have age limits? And if so, how can they be more strictly enforced?

  2. When commenting on a social media website, it is much easier to say mean things about others. They do not suffer from the same remorse because they are not talking to that person face to face. Also, this is a reminder that we must be very sensitive to others (boys and girls alike) when commenting on social media websites or just talking in general. We never know what they could be going through in their lives and even the most innocent comment could cause them great harm emotionally. Is it true, is it kind, and is it necessary.

  3. I agree. The prevalence of cyber-bullying is highly disturbing. I hope that this trend fades and that people realize how harmful this sort of bullying can be.

  4. Bullying has become such a big problem in today's time. It especially doesn't help when there is the internet and things like Kik. Cyber bullying may be easy for some kids to do since it is through technology, but I believe it is completely unnecessary and can obviously cause many problems.

  5. That is not okay. At all. Bullying is a serious problem with youth now and it makes me so sad that kids have to put up with this. Can we all please just be nice to each other? There's no reason to be telling other people horrible things like that just because they are insecure themselves. We don't know what other people are going through, we only know how we feel.
