According
to this article by Suzette Laboy, 500 baby sea turtles were released off the
Atlantic coast of Florida. The turtles were placed on beds of seaweed in the
water one by one so they would have a better chance at survival. The hatchlings
came from all over Florida: some of them were only two days old. The volunteers
that helped get the turtles into the water took extra care so as to have as
many survivors as possible. Hopefully the odds with the turtles released will
be better than if they had been left to their own devices. In the wild, only 1
in about 1,000 baby turtles live to adulthood.
I
am very glad that extra measures are being taken to protect these animals.
Loggerhead, leatherback, and green turtles are all endangered, so it is helpful
to have volunteers that are so dedicated to helping the turtles. We can learn
many things from our fellow inhabitants of the Earth, but if we continue
without taking measures like this to protect them, animals like the sea turtle
may go extinct. It is very important that we learn to live in harmony with the
animals of the planet, and this was a step in the right direction.

this is actually really great news! turtles are such lovely creatures, it's great to see that so much effort is going into protecting them

You were so descriptive, I wanted to be there. It sounds like such an adorable ceremony. I wish the babies luck!

ReplyDeleteIt is very nice knowing that people are going to very extreme measures to keep the new turtles safe. I feel like this is much needed because they have lived in safety and not their natural habitat, so the turtles should be kept safe while getting used to the land.

These days we are doing such horrible things to animals that it is good to see that some people actually make an effort to save turtles. I hope that volunteers like this can start doing things like this for other animals. We can learn a lot of animals and we need them more than we think! Ilana Lemack
ReplyDeleteIt's comforting to know that people are willing to help the environment in ways such as this. We have to be sure to protect the environment and preserve it, not to damage the Earth. It's especially important when the species is an endangered one such as these turtles.
ReplyDeleteI think this is FANTASTIC. I love animals and am so glad that these volunteers did so much to help these turtles. Maybe this sort of good doing can inspire others to do their part to help protect animals, particularly those who are endangered.
ReplyDeleteThis is an article that just gives me happy thoughts, along with the desire to go look at images of baby sea turtles. The approach to increased endangered species regardless to if there has been an environmental disaster is a great symbol of the growing responsible initiative in the U.S.
