Camille Farrar: "Can Music Stave off Dementia?"

This article, by Elizabeth Landau, addresses the effects of music on delaying dementia. In today’s society, the number of dementia cases is rising rapidly. Much research has been done to help bring down this number and help those already affected. Playing an instrument has been proven to help strengthen neural pathways and keep the brain functioning for longer. Even listening to music can stimulate the brain in patients with dementia. Although music is one of the most common ways to get this neural stimulation, other activities have been proven beneficial as well. The important thing is to keep the brain in shape.

As Alzheimer’s was present in a few of my family members, this article intrigued me. Dementia is a large problem currently, so any research going on to help those affected is extremely helpful. I hope that research like this continues to be done so that the number of patients with dementia will cease rising. In doing activities such as crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble, and playing instruments, we may be able to prevent the staggering rise that has been predicted for those with dementia.

  1. I agree that this kind of research should continue. Dementia is a terrible illness, and with every study done about it, we gather more means of preventing it, controlling it, and one day, hopefully, curing it.

  2. This article and the fact that dementia is rapidly rising intrigued me. There can be nothing done to prevent the horrible disease and nobody did anything to get it. Music and such things as crosswords puzzles can be very soothing so I can see how that could help prevent the disease. I'm glad that the science world has had this realization and is starting up the study of this.

  4. Music is definitely something that should be enjoyed by all. The fact that innocent people suffer from dementia is very saddening. Hopefully this research will continue to be successful and music will continue to help the patients in a positive way.
