Most of us have heard of George Zimmerman, who became famous, and, in some circles, infamous, for going free after shooting and killing Trayvon Martin working for a neighborhood watch. He is once more under the scrutinizing gaze of the media after after assaulting his ex-father in law and threatening his ex wife earlier this Monday. He was in possession of a gun, his ex wife says, and was threatening to use it. She called the police, and was breathing heavily when she requested aid, authorities say. Shelley Zimmerman requested a divorce last week, the massive media attention and subsequent trials most likely the root of their marital issues.
One would think that George Zimmerman would be more careful about his public appearance, knowing any scandalous story like this would be broadcast to the world. By threatening his ex wife with a gun, he makes himself seem like an unstable, gun-crazy man who should be locked up, much less allowed a gun. However, it is difficult to determine whether the massive media attention turned him into this, or if he was always violent and unstable.
It is a common occurrence for someone who was in the public eye receiving wide-spread attention, to crave that attention back once the public eye has drifted to another topic. In some cases they will do anything to get it back. The media also knows that they will receive more viewers if they find a way to bring back to life a controversial issue such as the Zimmerman Case. They might also distort or exaggerate facts in order to make certain issue more interesting to viewers. Though this might not be the case in this certain event, it is important that we take into account the tendencies of the media.
