Ashley Barnes 2nd Period: Medical Marijuana

Summary:
The New Jersey General Assembly recently passed a bill that will allow more access to edible Marijuana to minors. Governor Chris Christie was hesitant to sign and even vetoed the bill at first, because he was worried about the wider use and acceptance of the drug. Allowing marijuana for children would make it more accessible to other people. However, allowing it with a psychiatrist, physician, and parental approval would allow some sickly children to take the medicine they need to have a life changing effect on their health.

Analysis:
Allowing medical Marijuana will of course always be a risk, but I can understand why some parents would want to take it. If medical marijuana was the only cure to a child, and it does not further harm them, I find it personally reasonable to make the distribution of it legal. However, I do believe that some people will use this law to their advantage in a more negative sense than overcoming a health condition. I think that states who legalize this drug should become more aware of the 'loopholes' that people are able to pass through with laws such as these, and do their best to make it less possible. I think this article is significant, because it shows that certain laws are being reorganized and set up to serve and protect a greater amount of people.

  1. I understand how people can take it for medicinal uses, but I don't believe the drug should be easily accessible for minors. My understanding of medicinal marijuana is that it is used to alleviate pain and anxiety, not for actually curing any diseases or illnesses. If these are the uses for medicinal marijuana, I do no think that it should be easier to access for minors. This is because I pretty certain that more people suffer consequences from drug addiction rather the subjects who may need medicinal marijuana.

  2. I agree. Substance abuse is something that we have faced for years and this bill is something that many could take advantage of. I think that medical marijuana should be a sort of "last resort" in cures. If used in the young, they might abuse this in the future.

  3. I agree with Violoncello214, substance abuse is a serious issue that needs to be faced. Marijuana, in my eyes, is a gateway drug. It easy leads you in to other more seriously drugs that could kill you in one sitting. This will influence substance abuse and would probably not help us with the problem we're facing. Instead of just legalizing it to where the parent can hand the marijuana out like candy, it should be used in moderation with a prescription.
