Ariel Castro Commits Suicide by Nana Johnson

Ariel Castro, the 53 year old former bus driver who was sentenced to more than 1,000 years in prison for kidnapping and sexually abusing three women for years, committed suicide. He was found in his cell, hanging by a bed sheet. Castro kidnapped  Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight between 2002 and 2004. They ranged in age from 14 to 20 years old at the time they were taken and remained in his house for over a decade. One of the women, Berry, have birth to Castro's child who is now 6 years old. The women all suffered through unimaginable torture and rape, but managed to stay alive. Castro previously left a suicide note in his house, but it was said by the prosecutor that it was probably written to feel sorry for himself. Castro couldn't face even a portion of the struggles he put those three women through and ended his life on September 3, 2013.

The article is written so that the readers can get a good amount of background information. The introduction clearly states what the article is about. It later shows the concerns of both Castro's family and public opinion. The article gives an overall summary of the events that have occurred since 2002, and gives the reader a sense of sympathy toward the victims. The conclusion ends in a quote that makes the victims sound more empowered, and helps the reader understand that what's important is that the victims can heal. The author seemed biased against the perpetrator, though I wouldn't blame him. Some citizens are happy about his death. It gives some people closure knowing that Castro can never again hurt anyone now that he is gone.

  1. I agree with your analysis. I believe that the victims should take time to heal. I believe the abuser killed himself because he did not want to live with the grief of what he did those women.

  2. I also agree with your analysis. But I believe that the abuser really just didn't want to go to jail and he thought that killing himself was the best option.

  3. They totally should've tortured him before execution for his crimes, suicide is too good of a way for him to go

  4. I hate to say this because I'm usually a nice person, but suicide is too good for him. I've followed this case, and what he did to those girls is beyond horrific. It's unbelievable and unimaginable. I don't think this man killed himself because he "couldn't live with himself". There was something wrong with his brain. Anyone who is capable of being that cruel for so many years is not stable, and does not have any guilt. I'm glad he can't hurt anyone anymore.

  5. He committed suicide after about 3 months in jail when he was technically supposed to be there the rest of his life? That pretty much tells you that the security in the prison should have been a lot more focused on inmates to avoid problems like this, because I agree, suicide was too good for him.
