For the first time in a long time, Apple is making a product that isn't a slight variation on something they've already created. The iOS 7, which is coming out tomorrow, may look similar to the elegant cellular device that America knows and loves when powered off, but it's slender facade masks a new layout that is decidedly not like that of it's older siblings. The lock screen functions differently, the setup is largely more gesture-based, and the home screen is in 3D.
Apple is still gonna keep making iphones, though. They've been comfortably perched above other cellular devices for a long time. The phone may undergo superficial changes, but it won't leave. So, why would Apple want to make a new new thing when the "new" things they are already making are so successful?
There are a lot of potential answers to this, but the most basic is that the iOS 7 is part of a larger wave of innovations that aren't important because of the stuff they do, but because of how they do that stuff, and how they look while doing it. This product marks a shift in the public interest of wealthy nations such as America. People have gone from wanting something that works better to something that is simply more aesthetic or modern. Whether or not new technology is the product or the cause of this trend is debatable, but the trend itself is undeniably there, making us desire elegant, unnecessary things.
My opinion on this mindset is that it is probably not sustainable, but new phones themselves aren't the source of any evil. (and the screen is in threeee deee)

I, myself, have been looking forward to iOS 7. Though they keep making new phones and versions each year, iOS 7 completely changes the way the iPhone functions with its colorful screen and its new layout and 3D surface layout. As a tech geek, I'm excited.
