Incredible Breast Cancer Breakthroughs - Nana Johnson 2nd Period

Researchers have found that breast cancer can be treated better after fully diagnosing the patient specifically based on their genetics. Breast cancer was once considered to be one disease, but researchers have now found that there are at lease 10 subtypes of breast cancer with their own genetic signature. A new pill has been found prevent breast cancer for women who are at an increased risk by interfering with estrogen’s effects on breast tissue. For women with an average risk of breast cancer, potential side effects such as blood clots outweigh the benefits. The first drug for early-staged breast cancer, Perjeta, was recommended by the FDA . Doctors hope that if used during the earliest stages of breast cancer, the tumors will shrink, making them easier to remove or helping to avoid mastectomies. There are now 3D mammograms which were found to be 17% better than the traditional 2D x-rays. A new ultrasound system can help tell which lumps are malignant, reducing the need for biopsies. Researchers found that a vaccination helped prevent breast cancer in mice, which will soon be tested on women who had highly aggressive triple negative breast cancer.

Its very reassuring for me to read about all the new discoveries researchers have been making about this disease. Too many of us know/have known someone who has dealt/is dealing with breast cancer. There are so many methods researchers are trying, and each one is closer to the “cure”. All the technology and research developments that we currently have, in comparison to twenty years ago, will significantly help in the future. Because of the research, there are many more ways of prevention and early signs that will help so many people. I think this article is missing another part of this disease, though. It doesn’t mention breast cancer in men, and I still think that it needs to be known by more people that men can also get breast cancer. We mostly associate breast cancer awareness with women because its rare in men, but it doesn’t mean its non-existent. Perhaps because its so rare, men don’t usually get genetic testing for it the same way women do. The more tests we do, though, the less of a problem it will become in the future.

Suede Lacy-The Governmental Shutdown

1. Why did the government shut down?
Congress has one key duty in the Constitution -- pass spending bills that fund the government. If it doesn't, most functions of government -- from funding agencies to paying out small business loans and processing passport requests -- grinds to a halt. But some services, like Social Security, air traffic control and active military pay, will continue to be funded. Oh, and Congress still gets paid, too.
2.How will it effect us?
The mail will continue to come. The military will continue to fight. And Social Security checks will continue to be paid.
But if you need a federal loan to buy a house, you'll have to wait. If you want a gun permit or a passport, that won't happen anytime soon.

The Vatican bank - Montana Dalton 2nd

For the first time ever in history, "the Vatican Bank opens its books in transparency drive". After the very successful year of 2012, the banks interest rates have increasingly risen as well as trade and an increase in bond values.  From previous years, the bank had been accused of doing direct business with criminals which was cause stress on the economy of the bank. This bank is recognized as the IOR, or the Institute for Religious Work, has shared that they had an outstanding profit increase, specifically 86.6 million euros ($117 million) - a 325 percent rise on the year before.

I find this very interesting to see how economy not only affects civilizations, cities, and countries but specifically owned and growing businesses as well!

Airport Evacuated- Umair Nasser 1st Period

Jacksonville Airport was evacuated due to suspicious packages turning up in the terminal and parking garage yesterday. The police are unable to confirm if they have made any arrests regarding this case. The airport said in a tweet from its official account Tuesday evening that the evacuation was due to "police activity regarding suspicious packages.'' Witnesses saw a man being taken away a the security checkpoint.

This article makes me feel unsafe as a traveler. My family travels often, making connections through random cities around the world, and for this to be an issue in the USA after the countless security changes we have done to intensify the safety measures at our airports in quite disappointing. This matter should have been handled stealthily so that a whole airport wouldn't have to be evacuated. If this had happened to me, I would be more upset about the inconvenience of missing my flight, than happy about my safety. At the end of the day, the airline business is all about making traveling easy and convenient for the customer. This event may result in some airlines pulling out of their reserved gates at the Jacksonville Airport. I hope airports world-wide look at this as a learning experience, and a chance to triple check their safety plans.

Jellyfish wave shuts down Swedish nuke reactor

Summary: Jellyfish have clogged the pipes at the nuke reactor in the south of Sweden. The pipes had to be cleaned on Tuesday so the plant could start up again. This was not the first problem with jellyfish, three incidences have occurred in the last decade. They don't know how to stop this from happening, but it might happen more often later. They also have no way of tracking the jellyfish.

Analysis: The writer wanted to inform the reader of a strange occurrence that happen. In the text he used ethos and logos, he put in some reactions of the people around the jellyfish cleanup. I think that this is not really a problem, but since the jellyfish clogged the pipes so much the nuke reactor had to shut down, it could become a bigger problem. They don't have to monitor all of the jellyfish just some, but they need to check the pipes more often and not wait for something like this to happen again.

Teen Pleads guilty to child's death: Joan Milburn pd. 1

http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/01/us/colorado-jessica-ridgeway-case/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

Austin Sigg, a Colorado teen pled guilty to the murder of 10 year old Jessica Ridgeway. Austin was 17 when he committed the murder but was charged as an adult and pled guilty to all counts. Sigg lived only a mile away from Ridgeway's home. He was charged with strangling the girl and then dismembering her body. After that he proceeded to put the body parts in bags and hide some under his home, and then disposed of the rest at a park near his home. The police received his confession when Sigg's mother called them and handed him the phone.

Response
I am horrified by this crime. It is so hard to imagine that someone so close to our own age could commit such a heinous crime. I am really at a loss for words that something so brutal could be done to such an innocent child. I totally agree with the judged decision to try Austin Sigg as an adult, because I think he deserves to serve as much time as possible for this crime. My heart is with Jessica Ridgeway's family as they endure this horrible loss.

Kolina Hocevar period 5th Train mysteriously runs loose in Chicago

A Chicago commuter train crashed into an oncoming train mysteriously. The accident injured dozens of  people. "I don't know the last time, if ever, that this has happened" on the Chicago Transit Authority system, spokesman Brian Steele said. Forty eight people were injured and thirty three of them were transported to hospitals. There are so many unanswered questions. No one really knows exactly how many people were on the train. This all is very unclear and is still under investigation. "In order for a train to move, it has to be energized," said Ronald Ester, vice president of CTA Rail Operations. It is still unclear if there were any criminals involved.

I think that this is all really sketchy. This is something that needs to have some sort of answer to it. This is really a mystery that needs answers.
