People give social media a clear thumbs down -Sydney Ewing

The latest national NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll was given to the public with the topic of social media. The respondents have responded negatively towards social media, however most believe that technology has more benefits on the economy, and they are split about whether the federal government should break up tech companies like Apple, Amazon, Google and Facebook. To respondents of the poll come from across the economic classes of rural/urban residents. However, younger respondents are less likely to believe that social media divides the country and spreads unfair attacks and rumors.

Here are the summarized stats:
6 in 10 Americans say they don’t trust Facebook at all to protect their personal information.
57% agree with the statement that social media sites do more to divide the country, while 35% think they do more to bring the nation together.
55% believe social media does more to spread lies and falsehoods, and 31% say it does more to spread news and information.
61% think social media does more to spread unfair attacks and rumors against public figures and corporations, and 32% say it does more to hold those public figures and corporations accountable.
82% say social media sites waste people’s time, and 15% say they do more to use Americans’ time well.
69% say they use social media at least once a day.
60% saying they don’t trust Facebook to protect personal information. (In contrast, 35% don't trust the federal government with their information)
I thought that this poll was extremely interesting. Especially the fact that more people distrust Facebook than the federal government, especially considering some of the stuff we've been learning in class and the extreme distrust people had for the government around Nixon's presidency. Personally, I believe social media can be extremely lucrative (a single paid ad for a popular influencer can pay over 5k!) and an instant source of information and opportunity for networking. Many people just use it irresponsibly. Just to throw out an opinion here, I don't believe in social media “cleanses.” I don't think deleting twitter for a week is gonna make your life better. Just some food for thought. So essentially, social media isn't bad, just the people who use it.

  1. I agree with your assertion about social media cleansing, as more than a week is necessary to fully detox. Detaching yourself from social media is a commitment, but if so many people believe that it is negatively affecting them, they should follow through with it instead of just saying that it wastes their time. - Daniella Castanheira

  2. I do not believe that all people who use social media are bad. I mean if you look around nearly everyone you know uses at least one platform or another. At the end of the day it just comes down to how you use it, and for some this great responsibility can be more of a burden than for others, which does not mean that they are bad people, but that social media is bad for them. All in all, it is what you make of it.
