Girls at North Carolina Don't Have to Wear Skirts, Judge Rules - Emma Hancock

Girls at North Carolina Don't Have to Wear Skirts, Judge Rules

Three girls in North Carolina, at the ages of 5, 10, and 14, have decided to speak up against the traditional rules of wearing the skirt uniform at their school. They started by writing a school petition, signed by their fellow classmates, to be allowed to wear pants as a part of their uniform. This lasted a year until last week when a federal judge ruled this as unconstitutional. The judge, Malcolm J. Howard stated that “The skirts requirement causes the girls to suffer a burden the boys do not, simply because they are female,”. This case has brought up many conversations about dress codes and sexist rules that should not have a place in an educational environment where the focus should not be what is on a girl's body.

I think this is a great conversation that should be held in schools their prohibit girls to be comfortable in order to look presentable, it is another step in the process of equality starting at a young age. This reminds me of the 20s where women began to dress for themselves and conservatism was not overshadowing the need for equality and freedom.

  1. It's nice seeing little girls take a stance and attempt to change things they disagree with and change it for better
