In an article published by the New York Times on March 30, 2019, Mahir Zaveri writes about the kidnapping and murder of a college student at the University of South Carolina. Samantha Josephson, a 21 year old student, was last seen getting into a car that she thought was her uber early in the morning on Friday. Her body was found in a wooded area that night, and Nathaniel Rowland was arrested on kidnapping and murder charges on Saturday. No possible motive has been released by police. This possibility of kidnapping under the guise of an uber is a danger women face. Women are more vulnerable to kidnapping by a stranger and are generally taught to stay in groups and to not be alone late at night. This is an example of the inherent inequality women face in the us.
I hope her family is doing well, we need to be very cautious and stick with others to avoid this from happening again~ Stephannie Hernandez
ReplyDeleteFrom a young age, my friends were told by our mothers to always use the buddy system and to this day, whenever I go out, I get the same message. It is so sad that people have to go out with a mindset that allows them to be able to run/fight at any moment, but thats just the world we live in and until something changes, I and others will get that message from a parent to "watch your surroundings" "be smart" and "always watch your drink"
