Building a Wall is Ineffective Against Drug Smuggling - Chloe Meinershagen

https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/12/us/drug-traffickers-el-chapo-trial-drugs-across-border/index.html

Trump recently tweeted that without a wall, "criminals, gangs, human traffickers, drugs & so much other big trouble can easily pour in. It can be stopped cold!" However, contrary to the popular belief that drugs smuggled along the Mexican-American border go through illegal points of entry, the majority of drugs are snuck by through legal points of entry along the border. For example, cocaine smugglers hide the drugs within cans and put them in secret compartments of tractors, feigning as a farmer with beans. Another main method of drug smuggling is on boats in the Gulf of Mexico coast. Smugglers also used to use tunnels under Arizona's border with Mexico until they were found out and blocked. The most recent drug smuggling method is semi-submersibles, similar to submarines, which glide along the surface and are undetected. The use of planes is also a typical way to smuggle illegal drugs.

The point is, none of these versions of smuggling will be affected if we build a wall, making it a meaningless attempt to fix an issue, and extremely harmful to the natural ecosystem and animals that migrate and travel around the open parts of the border.

Previously to this article I had heard a few of the smuggling ways that were mentioned, however I had no idea that not many drugs are smuggled though illegal points of entry along the border. But if you think about, it makes a little sense, since if you were to cross the illegal parts with drugs you will for sure be caught, but if you try to hide it when crossing the border, there are chances you can get through clean. I think it is ridiculous to think that our president it claiming it will "stop cold" all of the criminals and drugs coming into America if we build a wall. It's such a bold accusation that is false and it is irritating to think many blindly believe the statement is true.
I can compare this situation to the Navigation Laws during the American colony time period, because Britain tried to access total control over the colonist's raw materials to only sold to Britain, there was an increase of smuggling from France and other European countries of products and raw materials for cheaper prices.

  1. This is so true and the facts are all here. Great examination of this. Our president is very ignorant to think that this is 100% going to work by building a wall.

  2. There needs to be more than just a wall. A wall will only show separation from Mexico rather than showing strong authoritative power in America. It is almost making it a game to drug smugglers.

  3. I completely agree that building a wall wouldn’t really show others that we are empowering our country but it would just show a separation. I don’t find a purpose in building the wall. -Lesly Marquez
