Netflix film, Birdbox, starring Sandra Bullock was a monster hit. People everywhere have been participating in the BirdBox challenge, a challenge inspired by the characters who wore blindfolds to avoid seeing a mysterious force. This viral internet sensation also took a turn, a teen in Utah crashed her car into another vehicle while participating in the birdbox challenge. Utah police said the crash involved a 17-year-old who used her beanie to cover her eyes. No injuries were reported, but the driver had a passenger, and their car lost control skidding into the westbound lanes on a parkway. Netflix has already warned viewers against the challenge this month, and in Colorado, police are predicting some drivers will attempt to do the challenge, and warning them in advance.
This article written by Faith Karimi was published on January 12 just a couple days after the incident occurred. Prior to this story, I have seen many videos on social media of people running into walls or falling downstairs when taking part in this challenge. I should have know someone was to take it to the next level and try to drive a car blind. This incident reminds me of the worst railroad disaster in North Carolina history, The Bostian Bridge Train Wreck. Occurring during the Gilded Age, people were blind on the train to realize the enginers never came to fix the engine. 5 minutes into the trip the train flew off a 60-foot bridge killing 23 people. The connection is that both the incidents were inspired by the industrial revolution. They both were crashes, one cause because the driver was stupid and drove blind, and the other because the people were blind to know they should have gotten off that train cause no one fixed their engine. The article was written to basically tell teens not to drive blindfolded, that it could result in a serious accident, even death, and ultimately because it is not cool. The article was written to show what could happen to you, and other people, if you were to participate in a challenge like this. This article is important because driving is already a dangerous privilege, that people have to earn, and sometimes we make dumb decisions like driving blind, but we don't realize the consequences to our actions. Things could have gone much worse for that girl and her friend, but luckily it was a learning experience for them to never do something so irrational again.

This is crazy that this challenge was taken this far to the point were they are driving while doing this challenge. Nothing it that serious and this should be a lesson learned for both they and everyone else.
ReplyDeleteI didn't think anybody would think driving blindfolded was a good idea but here we go.
ReplyDeleteInternet challenges have gotten seriously out of hand. Do y'all remember the ALS Ice Bucket challenge? What a simpler time.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely! I do not understand why people decided to take it this far.
