Starting earlier this year, teachers have been going on strike all across the country in protest of the government. Their solution: changing the government from the inside. According to one of the country’s top teacher unions, it seems like an unusual number of teachers might soon run for state office. It estimated about 554 educators-turned-candidates for state house and senate seats. That includes 512 running as Democrats and 42 as Republicans, most of them women. “What we are witnessing is not a moment but a movement by educators running for office to fight for the public schools our students deserve,” said NEA’s president, Lily Eskelsen García.

I think that this could be really good for our country because teachers having a political voice would secure a safe and welcoming learning environment for their kids. This would also improve the education system and teacher’s working environments. This relates to the current politics because recently celebrities with a lot of influence but very little political experience have been talking about running for political positions. This would be bad for our country because it would be harmful to have someone running our country that doesn’t know how to.
this was very well written and i agree that it would be good for our country to have teachers have a political voice.
ReplyDeleteI think you made some really good points here. I often hear people complaining about the education system, and teachers are rising up to change that. If they secure political positions, then positive changes are likely to occur, especially since teachers know firsthand what needs to be improved on.
ReplyDeletei think you made very valid points courtney, i definitely see your point of view that teachers need more of a say and representation.
