Sydney Ewing- Pipe Bombs Sent to Trump Critics in Mail

Cesare Sayoc Jr. sent out pipe bombs in the mail addressed to critics of Donald Trump. He sent 13 bombs in total and few of them were intercepted. None of the devices have exploded on their own and it is still to be determined whether or not they are able to detonate at all. Some of the intended recipients of the packages are Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and Robert De Niro, among other prominent Democrats and critics of Trump. Trump has stated that the acts were that of terrorism and have no place in the country.

To begin, I think that this is a little scary how many bombs got through the post office without being stopped or intercepted. I have been led to believe that those were only intercepted because the FBI got involved. Continuing on from that, this is another tragic example of U.S. domestic terrorism, which is a type of terrorism that generally tends to be glossed over. This reminds me a little of last minute Federalist attempts to fill up office (such as midnight appointments), because Sayoc was attempting to silence to voices of those he didn't agree with. Although the actions were completely different, the intent is somewhat similar. On a side note, Sayoc is also known to have a white van covered in conspiratorial pro-Trump stickers, and I feel as if that gives more insight into his mental state. I do appreciate that Trump released a somewhat professional statement about the situation. That was nice. Overall, it is good that the suspect has been apprehended, but acts such as these need to be more swiftly identified and dealt with.

  1. Chloe Meinershagen - This is absolutely ridiculous! I agree, if 13 bombs can be sent through the mail who knows what regulations are like. I also think your point about domestic terrorism is very interesting. One domestic terrorism that got overlooked was school shootings, which are so plentiful in occurrences and I'm not sure when Americans will care about their new generation of children over weapons.
