An Opioid Emergency That Didn't Go Very Far -- Rose Tharp

Trump declared a health emergency on opioids, that didn't cause much change. It got a few states a little bit more cash, and cleared some paperwork out of the way but it did nothing to quell the need for a stop to the crisis that is sweeping the nation.

This relates to history because it reflects how often someone in power makes promises and doesn't follow through. Like when George H. W. Bush promised no change in taxes, and ended up raising taxes in his only term.

  1. I feel like occasions like this cause the political authority involved to receive a lot of negativity, however, I think that we shouldn't necessarily blame them. Most of the time, people can't tell the outcome of their decisions and so they make the decision that they believe will best benefit their country. I believe Trump was just trying to make a change, but didn't do it in the most effective way possible.

  2. Even though it did not work out as effectively as it could have, I am glad that someone in power is recognizing and attempting to heal the opioid problem that our country faces. Many people do not realize how addictive they are so we need to spread awareness and precaution.
