Violet Wiedemer- Beto O'Rourk and Ted Cruz face off in their first debate

This Friday at SMU, Beto O'Rourke and Ted Cruz faced off in their first debate, where their two extreme views of Texas clashed. The two discussed the second amendment, the shooting of Botham Jean in his own apartment, and O'Rourke's DWI. Polls show that the debate was much closer than anyone in the mostly red state expected- with 47% in favor of O'Rourke and 45% in favor of Cruz.

This hearkens back to the 2016 historical debate, where there were several "firsts" within that election as a whole. Texas has been a red state for many years, and this is Ted Cruz's fifth year as senator. However, polls show that the majority of Texans believe that Beto won the debate and are in favor of him. National eyes are turned to the debate, which could prove that the stereotypical far right state isn't just that anymore.

  1. Jude Holland - I think this debate just further shows the deep divisions in our country, and polar opposite views between political parties.
