On Friday at SMU the first of three debates between Beto O'Rourke and Ted Cruz took place. They are both the candidates for a seat in the Senate for Texas and Cruz is running for re-election. The article discusses the two very different views of the candidates with Cruz being on the far right saying that O'Rourke will take away Second Amendment rights, and O'Rourke being an idealist from the left that is looking to turn Texas blue. They argued over issues from immigration to supporting NFL team members showing the dramatic difference between them. Neither won the sparring match of a debate and the race has now been classified as a "toss up" by Cook Political Report. This is one of the most watched races currently for the midterm elections because it would be a major turn around if a Democrat took the seat for Texas for the first time since the 90's.
This is very current news that effects not only Texas, but the whole of the United States as well. The midterms are a big deal for every state and each race should be paid attention too carefully. This race, as previously stated, is one of the most watched races because of the upset it could cause. This is important to know, however Texans shouldn't just be paying attention to what articles are saying about the race. Texans need to be actively watching and researching the debates and candidates so they may make their most educated decision on who to vote for. Mentioning voting, the article also brought up how Texas is ranked last among the 50 states in voting participation. This is clearly not something the Lone Star State should be proud of. Texans have a chance this November to turn that around and go out and vote, because in the end that is the most important thing. My hope is that Texans don't pay attention to how the candidates classify themselves as Republican or Democrat, but to their beliefs and choose the man that is most likely to take their wants into consideration. This race relates to Barack Obama's first victory as president when he started a movement that most citizens of the United States got behind whole heartedly. Beto is doing the same as he has loyal Texans at his side that are following a new face that wants to lead Texas to progress.
I cannot believe how soon the midterm election is coming up, and how close we are to turning Texas into a blue state. This could be a historic election and I'm glad we are able to follow it during a time we will remember.
ReplyDeleteIf Texas converts into a blue state, I will wear cowboy boots a cowboy hat a bandana bring a lasso ride in on a horse and yell YEE HAW at school for the next few days. It may be a bit of a fantasy considering Texas' very, very long history of liking its political attire colored red, but seeing how Beto and Cruz are nearly tied, only time will tell.
