Sydney Ewing: MS-13 gang activity

Five members of the MS-13 gang were indicted by the grand jury in connection with an armed robbery in Dallas. In California around 24 members were arrested and charged in a drug trafficking investigation.

The article was produced on September 1st, 2018. The writer, Bradford Betz, is based in California. Since Betz isn't a resident of Texas, his article is somewhat of a secondary source and the tone of the article may be inaccurate as to the exact details and nature of the MS-13 gang and their Dallas robberies. Gang violence is not unheard of in the U.S. and is an especially familiar subject in Dallas. The article was written for the public and to give a negative view of gangs and a positive view of law enforcement. The article is attempting to celebrate the achievements of law enforcement in stopping criminal activity and to provide the public with a sense of security offered by law enforcement. On the other hand, the article serves to deepen a fear of gangs into the public while also drawing attention away from the criminal activity that has yet to be stopped by law enforcement and the failures of law enforcement itself.

  1. People need to take more precaution when it comes to gang violence. Criminal activity is a big issue in big cities like Dallas and law enforcement needs to take more initiative when it comes to solving those kinds of issues.
