More and more young adults are joining the work force, and many high schoolers and middle schoolers are already thinking about their future after they graduate college. This means that more and more young women are being pressured to pursue a career based on their gender. Women make up 47% of the workforce, but only 9% of construction based jobs are filled by women. Why is that? One issue is that the labor pool is small- meaning that women aren't applying for jobs in construction, most likely due to internalized sexism and thinking that they aren't fit for the industry. Industries are pushing to change that, and to destroy the misconception that women aren't fit for these kinds of jobs. STEM programs are being encouraged throughout high schools, and making those more aware of the broadness of the construction industry, regardless of gender. Sexism has plagued the work force for centuries, its time to make jobs available to everyone.
