Alex Carrington- Nike Sides With Colin Kaepernick

The article, “Nike Takes Sides, Tapping Colin Kaepernick For New ‘Just Do It’ Ad”, was written today (September 3, 2018) by Nathaniel Meyersohn. Kaepernick was one of the first few to begin kneeling during the national anthem in 2016. Kaepernick has been out of the NFL lines since that season. Nike took a major risk when they made Kaepernick the new face of their brand because of the controversy of the subject. The other featured athletes include Serena Williams, Odell Beckham Jr., and Shaquem Griffins, who all stand behind Kaepernick’s decisions and goals.
Before reading this article, I knew a great bit of information on this topic, mostly because the basis of it affects me directly. I am greatly pleased that Colin Kaepernick is beginning to receive a bit of justice after his contract was not renewed (possibly because of his practicing of his right to freedom of speech and expression). This article connects to a time where it was wrong for African-Americans to practice even the simplest of their rights. If anyone spoke up against the issue, they were at a great risk- much like the risk that Nike took when they backed Kaepernick after these events. This article is presenting the fact that we must defend our beliefs no matter the consequences.

  1. Woah, that's very brave of Nike to do that knowing backlash they will get. I agree, it shows how much significant change has happened before of the time African-Americans fearing for their lives for voicing their opinions compared to the present, and that's great.

  2. This post was very well written, and I agree with you that we should defend and fight for what we believe in, even when you might be the only one standing up for your ideals.
