Are Museums Still Important in the Digital Age? - Kennedy Hannible

On September 11, 2018, the National Museum of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro was lit up in flames from an unknown factor. This fire turned up to 20 million artifacts into dust. Now we wonder if having virtual reality accessible will it make the importance of museums and what they hold relevant. Many artifacts in museums have been collected for years and years and just because we don't have to get up and travel to one doesn't mean it is any less important.
I personally feel that the whole point of museums is the show the artifact, but also create a setting where the artifact could be found, used, or shared. Museums Maybe more accessible virtually now, but that doesn't mean there isn't importance in experiencing the real deal close up. Artifact being seen in real life and in real time can give a person a sense of history and how far we a people have come and how much farther we have to go.

  1. I agree with you, when I see pictures of historical things on my phone(or not in person) I am not as excited as when I actually go to the museum or see it in person. I love that electrical devices can be used to see these things like this but personally, I like to be there to get the full experience.

  2. I also agree that visiting artifacts in real life is more beneficial. There is a sense of appreciation you gain from seeing something from so long ago up close. I think going to museums are important to experience and learn about our past. Lily Philips
