Shayne Grant: White House rejects immigration plan from McCain-Coons

Arizona Republican Senator John McCain and Delaware Democrat Senator Chris Coons are expected to unveil a new, bipartisan bill on immigration, specifically dealing with DACA, this week. The bill would grant citizenship to illegal immigrants in the US brought as children since 2013. However this bill does not address President Trump's wishes to end "chain migration," the diversity visa program, or the $30 billion border wall. Because of this, the White House has already come out and rejected the bill. The President tweeted that any deal without these policies will be considered a "waste of time." Both Senators argue that the American people want a deal to be made and that This bill is strong and is a great compromise for both sides.

The bill that the two senators have proposed are in my opinion, the best the country will get before the deadline of March 5th. The bill renews a form of the the democrat-supported DACA program while still meeting many Republican requirements. President Trump needs to understand that the bill will not be solely for Republicans and needs to represent both parties. It has taken months for both sides to reach any type of agreement and it's time that the president complies with this. However, I understand his angst to get the border wall passed. His entire campaign ran on this and the president would face false campaign promises if he does not get it done.

  1. It’s definately getting closer to that deadline, however I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch for Trump to at least have a good basis by the time. In his State of the Union speech he talked of a 4 point plan for immigration, and it got an astonishing 72% approval rating. If he can refine his points and stop dancing around the economic issue of a wall I think he may have a cohesive plan by the end of the month. Doesn’t say as to whether it will be effective or not however. Time will tell.
