MARY MORGAN SMITH 2/4

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/29/sports/baseball/cleveland-indians-chief-wahoo-logo.html

Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Indians have recently announced that they will no longer display the Wahoo Logo on their uniforms starting in 2019.  The logo, which has been the team’s icon since 1948,  has been increasingly under fire for being offensive and racist. Although no longer displayed on their uniforms, consumers will still be able to purchase items with the Wahoo logo on it. Ultimately, I think this is a step in the right direction for the organization. However, I think that people should not be able to purchase items with the offensive Logo on it. I understand that the Indians organization, from a financial standpoint, would lose a lot of money if they banned the logo from consumers so I can accept that decision even though I don't like it. Also, the Atlanta Braves and the Washington Redskins have been ridiculed for having offensive logos and names too. I think this decision by the Indians, being a professional sports team, will put pressure on other teams to change their offensive logos and or names. This event reminds me of when people thought that blackface was acceptable, but as people began to start having more progressive mindsets, they stopped.
