Manon McCollum -- Supreme Court refuses to block Pa. ruling invalidating congressional map
The Supreme Court recently, at least indirectly sided against Pennsylvania Republicans in a Gerrymandering case. Republicans were contesting the newly drawn state lines, and the Court refused to see the case. This means that years of Republican Gerrymandering have been partially counteracted, and gives the Democrats more of a chance of flipping the house, and a strategy to fight Gerrymandering in the future.
I think that this is a fantastic development, and hope that these methods are used more frequently to counteract Gerrymandering across the country (especially in Texas... zoo wee mama!) Gerrymandering is an extension of Jim Crow laws in the South, created to suppress the votes of the opposite party (but, specifically and historically) against poor, and specifically black poor people. This practice continues to this day, a more complex version of the poll tax and grandfather clause.
finally dems have a way to make the government more equal again and gerrymandering is something that needs to gone asap.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that the court is taking steps to fix this. Gerrymandering sounds like something that should have been left in the 30s and it's honestly appalling that it still exists in this country.
ReplyDeleteI am glad the issue of gerrymandering is in progress of being fixed. It made the elections unfair!
ReplyDeleteIt's great that the courts are striking down gerrymandered districts, and I love seeing the Democrats get their proper representation, but it's still important to remember that gerrymandering is a huge issue spanning he country and practiced by members of BOTH parties, even if (as an article on the Princeton website proves) Republicans do it significantly more.
ReplyDeleteI think gerrymandered districts are unnecessary but am glad that they are being resolved. I also, however, agree that both parties use it and that we must keep an eye out for warning signs that it's power and effect is becoming abusive.
