After 6 months since his escape from Mexico's Antiplano jail, El Chapo—Mexico's notorious drug lord, has been recaptured by Mexican marines this past Friday from within his house in Los Mochis. The confrontation preceded five suspects' deaths and one marine wounded. He is called to extradition to the U.S.
I was hardly suprised when news of his recapture came. One thing that I, for sure, am interested in knowing is if he will be extradited to the U.S. Otherwise I'm sure he'll escape again—for the third time. He'd easily find help from within and outside any Mexican prison. Heck, I'd be willing to bet that even Peñanieto (one lousy president) could sell El Chapo his freedom with the way corruption is behind everything in Mexico's government. I'd be willing to go as far as imagine a situation where all of El Chapo's "captures" were staged (of course he'd be payed a hefty sum) to make the war on drugs seem efficient. Meanwhile the government is saying "look at us, how well we fight against these drug dealers" and the public nods in approval. Later the deal is done and they let him go. How easily he escaped from Antiplano, riding his motorcycle out of his dug-up prison tunnel and into the setting sun. Just like a cheey Mexican novela. Of course most Mexicans don't trust the government, myself included. In the end, the only way I'd find myself suprised is if El Chapo was extradited to the U.S, I'd like to see him try to get out of THAT situation.
And like in the days of the Guilded age in america, El Chapo can be compared to a 19th century robber baron, except his buisness is drug dealing, and he's not a politician. He also enjoys some good publicity and support from poor Mexicans that he's helped the way people like Boss Tweed aided immigrants. People rejoiced the day he escaped Antiplano prison. Its so sad to see corruption and ignorance taking over my country *quietly sobs*.
