The article I read was about a planned teacher 'sick-out' which, really in one form of another was a teacher organized strike. The leader of this so called 'sick-out' Mr. Steve Conn said that the teachers of Detroit were fighting back against the horrible conditions in which, their students and themselves have to work in. Mr. Conn was the president of the Detroit Teacher's Federation until August, when he was asked to step down after he disobeyed their code of conduct. The article ends with the superintendent saying, that they understand why the teachers feel as though they should've done this, but it is in their best interest to deal with what they have right now and teach the students.
I think the reason this article was written was to address the public and to let them know that they had it under control and are going trying to figure something out in the mean time. The American Federation of Labor and the teachers striking have similar beliefs, as they both fought/are fighting for better wages, working conditions, and hours.
