SUMMARY:
According to a new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, using marijuana at an early age can have long-term consequences on the brain. Researchers found that people who start smoking at the age of 14 tend to not have as much grey matter in the orbitofrontal cortex. That part of the brain helps you make decisions, and a lack of volume in that area can essentially make you...slow(er). During the teenage years is when your brain gets used to making serious decisions. So developing your brain with a kick of Mary Jane can alter the overall function of your brain in the mere future. Also it is observed that marijuana can alter the way your brain connects with itself, which means it will take you a while to learn new material, adapt to certain things, and make associations. The way your brain is wired starts to break down with the use of marijuana.
ANALYSIS
In today's society, marijuana is "THE DRUG". The drug that everyone wants. It's the drug that makes you feel good. The blessing that puts you on cloud nine. When in reality, it is still a drug that can be used for harm (or good). This used to be the same thing with tobacco. Everyone loved it. Everyone enjoyed it. It put people on cloud nine. It was a big deal, a big cash crop (one of the first crops to lay the foundation for america's economy) and everyone used it, grew it and sold it. But eventually there was something wrong with the drug. It had a bunch of negative effects, and caused a lot of controversy when dealing with it. Same thing is happening with marijuana now.
