(For Week 24/ week of March 17)
Ebony Wilkerson drove her car into the surf of the Atlantic Ocean, with her three children still inside. Luckily, other people at the beach heard the kids crying for help, and got them out before it was too late. Earlier that day, her sister had called the police in fear that Wilkerson was a danger to her children. The sister said that Ebony was "talking about Jesus and that there's demons in my house," and that she seemed unstable. As her sister was talking to the police, she speed off in her minivan, but they caught up to her. Oddly, her sister had taken away her car keys before, so it's unknown how she got them back. As she drove into the surf, Ebony kept repeating "'We're OK. We're OK. We're OK,'". She told them that she was taking them to a better place, and that she was keeping them safe. When the children were out of the car, Wilkerson walked away, with a strange look on her face (witnesses said that she almost appeared to be "possessed") . She was arrested on three counts of attempted first-degree murder. Wilkerson lived with her husband in South Carolina, but she left to seek shelter with her sister because of repeated domestic situations. Wilkerson had been checked into a hospital on Monday, but she later checked herself out the next day, a sign to her sister that something was wrong.
I was very glad when I read that the children were okay. This woman was obviously mentally ill. If she didn't have a pre-existing condition, she had to have simply snapped It's possible that her issues with her husband drove her off the deep end (no pun intended). From what was said in the article, it seemed like she might have been abused by her husband, and it's possible that her children were being abused as well. Regardless, what she tried to do is inexcusable. It's sad that these children will lose their mother, but if she is that dangerous, then it's for the best. However, if their father is abusive, then ending up in his custody could put them back in another life-threatening situation. Hopefully they will end up with a relative who can care for them and who isn't mentally unstable.
