"Texas and Five Other States Resist Processing Benefits for Gay Couples" (Melissa Kurtzman, 5th Period)

Summary: This article talks about a couple, Alicia Butler and Judith Chedville, who were told they had to go to a federal army base to obtain a military spouse identification card. Chedville is an officer in the Texas Army National Guard and Butler is a lawyer in Austin. The two were married in California in 2008 and only lately have been allowed to get the same benefits as heterosexual couples in the military. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel recently declared that spousal benefits be given to homosexual couples in all branches of the military as part of the Defense Of Marriage Act that was struck down by the Supreme Court in June. However, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, and West Virginia have said that this decree is in direct conflict with state laws that don't recognize same-sex marriages.

Analysis: I think it's sad that states are still treating same-sex marriages with such hostility. All these people want are the same benefits that heterosexual couples get, such as healthcare and other critical things, but these six states are being stubborn. I hope that the issue gets resolves soon and these couples will be able to get the same benefits as everyone else.

  1. People don't like change or anything that will affect the social norm. This wants to push everything that our society has seen as correct to the side, and they're scared of it.
