Imagine yourself in this scenario. Your sitting at home chilling and all of a sudden your friend, who is drunk at a party, calls you stating that he/she needs a ride home. Would you do it? What if school claimed the Zero Tolerance policy? Your the captain of your volleyball team. Does that make a difference? Two weeks ago, Erin Cox, a high school honors student received a call from her drunk friend needing a ride home because she was to drunk to drive. Erin, willing to help her, drove over there, not thinking it was such a huge deal. A week later, she and others who were drunk at the party received citations and warnings from the police department. Not only that, but she was removed from her position as Captain of her volleyball team and suspended for 5 games. The school claimed that she violated their zero tolerance policy and use of alcohol and drug use. Reaction has come from literally everywhere, mostly being off of Facebook remonstrating that the school's reaction was way to harsh and her parents tried to go to court but court states they cannot do anything the school. Its viral. People do not see what was wrong with the issue when Eric was trying to help a friend. However, the school states that she should not have been anywhere pertaining to alcohol or around it....even with helping a friend etc. Really?
Personally, I think is is totally unfair. I could see the schools point of view but they take it to the literal extremes. If anything her friend could have gotten hurt, she could have drove with other drunk drivers and what have you. Eric really saved her friend's life; anything could have happened to her. This is why it is beneficial to have good friends watch out for us. Hopefully, the school will take everyone's feelings and Erin's family in to consideration. If it were me, I would have rushed right out there. A life in general is always more important than the things that eventually won't matter so much. See? We can behave!;)

This is why a zero tolerance policy is never good, there are always good kids that get hurt from policies that are not lenient. The school should change their policy so that kids are not afraid to help their peers out, no mater the circumstances.
ReplyDeleteThis seems like a very flawed system for dealing with behavior. High school students are children and children make mistakes and learn.
ReplyDeleteComment by Rhyann Lee 5th period: This is a very stupid rule, I don't see anything wrong about what she did. Its not like she was drinking to, she was just helping a friend. If I was in her place I would go help a friend to because the girl could have died driving with people who were drunk also. That school system sucks!
ReplyDeleteI understand the school's zero tolerance policy, but if the girl was only there to pick up her friend and not drinking, I don't understand why she was punished. Obviously the other girls who were drinking should be in trouble but I feel like being suspended from volleyball and getting her position as captain taken away is a little harsh.
