-Nia Edwards 4th period Gonzaga students could face expulsion for using gun to fend off intruder

On November 10, 2013 at 12:33pm Leslie Holland wrote an article informing that two students could be facing expulsion for the possession of a gun. On October 24, two college students, Erik Fagan and Daniel McIntosh, were visited by a six-time convicted felon, who had just gotten out of jail, at their apartment. The felon barged in when the two refused to give him money. One of the students pulled out a gun, scaring the intruder away. Because the apartments are owned by the University, when the police were called, so was the campus security. When the campus police arrived, a pistol and a shotgun was confiscated. Although the two guns were legally registered, "a disciplinary board hearing on Friday, the board, made up of three faculty members and two students, found Fagan and McIntosh guilty of two infractions -- possessing weapons on school grounds and putting others in danger by the use of weapons." Both seniors now face suspension or expulsion due to this inconvenient event.

This article was shocking to me. The fact that the school board doesn't take into account that if those guys didn't have the guns the felon wouldn't have left like he did. They could have seriously gotten hurt. Even if they aren't allowed to have guns on campus, it is a good thing they did or they could've possibly have been injured. I hope that these two students don't get suspended or expelled especially since they are seniors. It would be very inconvenient if in their last year of school they got kicked out for something like this. It's not like they were using the guns for anything bad, they were just defending themselves.

  1. This is very similar to my article, teens protecting themselves or someone else. These are innocent lives involved. So....what if the intruder would have seriously hurt the students? Then the University would have experienced a huge ordeal. This would have gone viral, all over the news. Would they rather have two students seriously hurt or killed? Or an intruder who barged on to campus hurting innocent students? Maybe they should have looked at it that way..

I'm so glad I live in Texas. Texas law protects gun owners in cases where a person is trespassing on private property, attempted to robbery and sexual assault. In all of the above cases, it is authorized and justified to use deadly force with a weapon in Texas. No university RULE can top state LAW. It's unfortunate that this event occurred in Washington state instead of Texas.
