Despite pants now being commonplace women's wear, some schools still require female students to wear skirts as a part of their dress code. Luckily, some progress was recently made on this front when one north Carolinian school's policy was deemed unconstitutional. The judge reasoned that placing this undue burden on female students only was discriminatory since it did not fall onto their male counterparts. It is also considered a detriment to their ability to learn which is extremely counterproductive since that's the entire purpose of school.
This story was a victory in my opinion and a welcome reprieve from the depressing news and drama currently dominating the headlines. The schools that I've attended with dress codes have unfairly targeted girls and forced them to freeze in the wintertime given their short skirt length. Although it's a weak comparison to be sure, this decision reminds me of roe v wade. Both had decidedly feminist outcomes and both focused on discrimination exclusive to females or at least those with medically female bodies.
I believe that you had a good comparison and I am glad that the judge agreed that this was discriminatory to females.
ReplyDeleteI think you made a great comparison, because women having control over their bodies starts with issues like this. If we don't make progress in dress codes, I can't see how we can improve other situations. -Miranda Farrar
