Democratic Presidential candidate Andrew Yang, a Chinese-American Entrepreneur who has joined many others in the bid for the democratic candidate in the 2020 election is proposing a "freedom dividend" that is intended to replace and expand welfare into straight-up paying each American citizen 18 years or older $1,000 per month.
While this may sound radical at first, upon closer examination, it is actually quite cleverly designed. Alaska already has a system in place similar to it, in which they set aside oil money and dish out over a thousand dollars each month to every citizen. And, despite its presence in an exceptionally conservative state, it has not only been wildly successful, but popular amongst Alaskan citizens. He plans to pay for it using a value-added tax, which taxes companies like Amazon, and will generate billions of dollars in revenue each year.
This reminds me of the New Deal, due to its quasi-socialist nature in policy, and progressive thinking about the role of the government in the lives of Americans. Yang is, quite similarly to previous presidents, attempting to provide Americans with the freedom to make a living and navigate the economy in the ever-changing world we live in.
