Julian Assange, the creator of WikiLeaks, who had been spending 8-9 years in the Ecuadorian embassy in Enlgand, seeking asylum has been arrested. He had been allowed to stay at the embassy because Ecuador doesn't have an extradition policy, but Ecuador finally decided to stop giving the man asylum and had the British government arrest him. He initially sought asylum because the Swedish government was going to charge him with sexual assault on minors. While in the Ecuadorian embassy, he continued to publish national secrets, including those of the United States on WikiLeaks. This lead to potential additional charges that he might face from the US and other western countries. It is thought he has become an agent of the Russian government and may have helped elect president Donald Trump. Of note, some people still think of him as a hero.
This is extremely similar to the pentagon papers that were released 1971. The difference between them is that Julian Assange claims to only have a forum for people to post secrets, while the pentagon papers were stolen by someone who had access to US secrets. I think it is easy to say that a countries government shouldn't keep secrets from its people, however, there are times when those secrets being released can cause serious harm.
I think there is a lot going on with this one man, and he will definitely have some interesting stories to tell if he survives, I would like to know how this ends. GREAT TOPIC!
