Yesterday one of the seven cathedrals of Notre Dame burned and was destroyed yesterday. Known as the Paris cathedral or, "Our Lady of Paris," it was the mast famous out of the Notre Dame cathedrals. It was built in the 1160s on the Ile de la Cite in the Seine. The French think of it as a central part of their identity and it holds valuable works of art and religious symbols. Over 14 million visitors a year visit the cathedral making it one of Paris's main attractions. The Paris's prosecutor's office has ruled out arson and terrorism but has not identified a cause of the fire. One of the relics that was saved was the Holy Crown of Thorns or the Catholic Church's equivalent of the crown jewels.
Even though the Catholic Church might not be everyone's favorite denomination, the cathedral is a central part of French identity and history. The artistic contributions of the cathedral were some of the best of it's time and it relates to some of the most important moments in history. This is similar too when the the British burned the White House in 1814.
