On April 13th, 2019, BTS became the first K-pop group to perform on SNL. They performed two songs, "Boy With Luv," which is from their newest EP, Map of the Soul: Persona, and "Mic Drop," from their 2017 EP, Love Yourself: Her. Korean music has been steadily rising in popularity in America, but BTS has taken that renown to an international level. The seven-member group, made up by rappers RM, Suga, and J-Hope, and singers Jin, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, are expected to smash sales charts with their newest release. Not everything is about the numbers though; many fans, of both SNL and BTS, are simply excited by the fact that SNL is finally showcasing some Asian representation, considering that the number of Asian hosts that the show has had can be counted on one hand.
This article was written by Amir Vera and Madeline Holocombe and was updated on April 14, 2019. Before reading the article, I was well aware of the fact that BTS would be performing on SNL, but was unaware of SNL's rather shameful lack of Asian representation. SNL isn't the only stage where BTS became the first K-pop group to appear. They also presented an award at the Grammy Awards in February, performed at the American Music Awards in 2017, and sold out a concert at New York's Citi Field in minutes. Despite this, many people fixate on the demographic and intensity of BTS's fans rather than the group's message, something the author of this article is guilty of.
