"Blasts at Churches and Hotels in Sri Lanka Kill More Than 200" -- Youssef Bakr

In the morning and early afternoon of 2019's Easter Sunday in Sri Lanka, over 200 Roman Catholics were targeted and killed and hundreds of others wounded. The explosions occurred in several different cities, including Negombo, Colombo, and Batticaloa. 35 tourists were among those killed in what Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, described as "vile attacks," some U.S. citizens.

After decades of gruesome civil war in Sri Lanka, it has actually seen a relatively stable state of peace in the last decade. Apart from a few minor incidents (none of this magnitude) this is the only major attack that has occurred within the last ten years.

This is reminiscent of the Birmingham Church Bombing of September 15, 1963.

  1. Emma Burkey: It's hard to stop thinking about these attacks because of the sheer magnitude of it. The fact that they have been at peace, as you said, makes it even more shocking that something this devastating could occur.
