A school in Tennessee has recently apologized for an 8th grade social studies assignment which asked student to pretend to own slaves and list their expectations. At Sunset Middle School, the assignment touched on topics like immigration, child labor and slavery, asking innocent students to "create a political cartoon depicting immigrant labor in the US" or to "write a poem or song lyric that compare and contrasts the lives of plantation owners and heir slave population". The assignment was posted on Twitter by Dan Fountain, whose 13 year old sister received the assignment. This angered him since his sister was one of the few African American kids at that school. Both teachers that have handed out this assignment has apologized profusely. The Williamson County Schools Superintendent Mike Looney has apologized, also, leasing a statement on Twitter about the inappropriate assignment. The assignment has since been pulled and excluded from the grade book.
This topic relates to the broad topic of slavery up until 1875, when the 13th amendment was passed. All the way back to Jamestown, Virginia, slavery has been legal in all or a segment of US for over two hundred years. Seen as the Triangular Trade has depicted slavery as horrifying, dehumanizing, and disgusting practices and punishments.
With slavery being such a sensitive topic, I'm surprised by how the assignment was handed out so carelessly. It was completely inappropriate to teach young, innocent children something like this without basing it off of something first. This will only make the children ignorant towards the topic later on in life, especially since majority of the students are white, it teaches them racial bias. This situation could have been avoided and prevented if it was handled with consideration.
I don't think this assignment was thought out, but hopefully they have learned to think about how people will feel about these type of things.
