LA teacher strike- Perla Diaz

LAUSD  strikes' brings a day of disruption to students

This Monday morning thousands of teachers in LA were on strike protesting for higher wages among other things. This marks the first teacher strike in LA in thirty years. Among what the teacher union is asking for it included a 6.5% raise, smaller class sizes, less standardized testing, and an increase in support staff such as nurses, librarians, etc.

Personally I think that teachers getting higher wages is something that should've been done a long time ago. Teachers are the ones who our teaching and help shape what our countries future looks like. Teachers have to put forth an immense amount of effort in order to ensure that our youth is given a good education, so that they can eventually be prepared to become respectable citizens of society. We can't really expect our teachers to be incredibly enthusiastic about teaching students everyday when most of the time they are unappreciated and most of the time are given a teaching environment that makes it extremely difficult for them to make meaningful progress with students. Our teachers are largely responsible for what our future will look like and as a result I think they should be payed and treated accordingly.

Horace Mann was a part of the House of Representatives during the early 1800s and was a huge promoter of public education which appealed largely to the middle class. Today we are fortunate enough to have a free public education that is open to everyone and I think we should work to make our learning environment one that every one can benefit the most out of.
