Sophie Knox- Father arrested for “social experiment”
Boguslaw Matlak was arrested near Chicago for in dangering the life of a minor (his three year old son.) he had parked his vehicle outside some restaurant and then proceeded to yell at his son. To quote, he said, “You are being bad and I’m going to punish you by putting you in the trunk.“ Many witnesses say that then he put his child in the trunk (not to mention it was a 89 degree day) After returning back to the restaurant, Matlak gets arrested, and family services removes the kid from their custody. Currently, the child is staying with a relative. After his arrest, him and his wife (Laura) are claiming that this was a “social experiment” in seeing how people would react to this scenario. They even have video evidence showing them explaining to their kid what was happening, and proof that they did not put him in the trunk. They also add that these videos were going to be uploaded into their aspiring YouTube channel modeled after the famous T.V show, ‘What would you do?’.
Analysis: Clearly, it was right of the police to arrest Matlak. They had enough probable cause to do so. I’ve watched What Would You do in the past, and unlike Bouslaw, they inform the police of what is happening, so if a person calls them, they know not to come and arrest someone. I do also believe that Matlak and Laura should get their son back since he was not actually endangered. One topic that I think is overlooked often is using children for publicity. This case does not disgust me like the DaddyOFive situation did, but still it makes me uncomfortable. The child trusts his parents, but he doesn’t actually understand what is going on and seems like a prop, in my opinion. He only three years old, don’t put him in the spot light like this. This event can also be related to th DaddyofFive situation because it is using kids to get views.

I don’t think they should have arrested him if they had video evidence
ReplyDeleteI believe arresting him was the right thing to do, even if the kid was told what was going on, he's 3! He's too young to take part in experiments like this because he can't say no at that age. Also, exploiting your child to get fame is absolutely tasteless.
ReplyDeleteWho cares if the kid was told what was happening; he was three! He can't properly process the situation or take action against his parents. "What Would You Do?" is okay because it is monitored by many adults ready to step in if need be. This was not the case here. What if something had happened to Matlak and he was unable to return and retrieve his son?
ReplyDeleteI think it was completely irresponsible of the parents to even involve their child in something like this I agree that today we are often times desensitized to the exploitation of children and I think that unless we acknowledge it more and find ways to prevent it from happening it will only lead to more incidents like this and it will probably escalate.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it was an experiment, there are just some things you don't do. Since it was posted on the internet, of course people would react like that. The child is 3, he could not possibly completely understand what was an "experiment" and what is real life. -Jendayi Harris
