"Indonesia earthquake and tsunami: Dead buried in mass grave" (Youssef Bakr)

BBC published an artcile deatiling the aftermath of the recent earthquake and tsunami that have devastated the Palu area of Indonesia. The death toll currently exceeds 800, and that number could climb, as there are some "remote areas [that] have yet to be contacted," and potentially dozens of people trapped under debris and rubble. Another factor that contrubuted to the high number of deaths was the region's inabilty to notify the people of the impending waves. None of Indonesia's tsunami detector buoys were working at the times preceding the hit, the area has no sirens, and power outages stymied the transmission of messages to the public.

This catastrophe is similar to the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004. Many areas of Southeast Asia, Indonesia especially, were rocked by the waves' destruction. Of course, the more recent tragedy has not killed nearly as many people, but the events are similar in nature. Both started with an earthquake that sent tremors through the ocean, giving rise to gargantuan waves that resulted in tremendous loss of life.
