Shark attack near San Diego injuries 13-year-old boy - Joziah German

On Saturday, before 7 am, a 13 year old boy was attacked by a shark while lobster fishing in the waters near San Diego. Still in serious condition, he has been downgraded from this original status according to a spokesperson from Rady Children Hospital in San Diego. The boy reportedly suffered traumatic injuries to his upper torso, and was rushed to a hospital about 20 miles north by a coastal lifeguard. It was opening season for catching lobster, so several people were in the water diving collecting lobsters. People heard his screams, and helped bring the crying boy ashore using a kayak. Lifeguards response to the attack was quick and short helping to save the child’s life. Nobody really knew the extent of the boys injuries until they pulled him out of the water and were given him to the paramedics. Local beaches have been closed for days, and coast guards have been on the look for sharks in the area.

This article published by Artemis Moshtaghian and Dakin Andone, CNN, was published Sunday evening on September 30th, 2018. This story was published just days after the awful event, and was released to help and warn others in the area to beware of possible sharks preying in the waters. I have heard of multiple shark attacks in the past, but none to this extent of harm. It’s crazy that people said they could see his full clavicle, his hip socket and ball. I found this story so sad, and I hope he gets better. This story reminds me of the story Soul Surfer, about a competitive surfer named Bethany Hamilton who was surfing when she got attacked by a shark, and it tore off her arm, but not her passion for the sport. This article most likely was written to warn locals of sharks in the waters, and to advise them to stay out of them until further notice. Sharks are wild animals that when hungry will eat whatever it wants. The authors wrote this article to inform people that sharks are still out there and they should be feared. They are stronger than humans, quicker, and are not as intelligent, so they could interpret people as seals. This article is important because it tells people that the ocean isn’t theirs, and that other animals, very dangerous animals, call that place their home. If people get in their habitats and take their food, those animals will start coming closer to coasts looking for food, less happy than they were before.

  1. This story is crazy. I hope the little boy is okay. I can’t imagine being in the water at that time. I like your connection that you made and how informative your article was.

  2. It's very sad that a little boy got hurt but is there not some sort of shark warning that can be given so people can know not to be near the water around that time.
