North And South Korea- Perla Diaz

North, South Korea begin removing landmines along fortified border

On Monday South and North
Korea began to remove landmines that were placed along the border between the two countries. South's defense ministry stated that this was done in order to release tension and instill trust between the two nations. They were set to begin removing landmines in the Joint Security Area (JSA) however there was no confirmation that the North had begun the process.

I think that this is a very progressive move on both nations towards more peaceful relations. I don't think that peace should mean that both countries have to agree with each other's views and ideals but at the very least for the greater good of the entire world they should at least be able to coexist. The deal also calls for the removal of guard posts and weapons in the JSA which i think furthers the trust that can be built but only if the North is actually keeping there side of the deal since there is still no confirmation on that. The two countries fought one another in the Korean War during 1950-1953 and ended in a stalemate and since then at least nine soldiers have been killed in incidents with North Korean soldiers. It wasn't until April that both countries announced that they wanted to convert the DMZ into a peaceful zone.
