Lily Philips- Record Number of Registered Voters

The number of registered voters on National Voter Registration Day, last Tuesday, September 25, broke the record with 800,000 voters. This was definitely a surprise to many since they aimed for 300,000 people and hoped for anywhere between 400,000-500,000. The increase of voters shows the interest in the upcoming midterm election and its high-stakes. The last record was in the 2016 Presidential elections coming in at 771,321 voters. Campaigns have partnered with fellow companies such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google where they advertise and promote voter registration with links to sign up. This can be seen as a good thing, and it’s important that the people of our country participate in our government by voting.
This article was published in Time Magazine and was written by Katie Reilly. This article was published today, October 1st, 2018, so it is very recent and up to date on its information. This topic can connect to the responsiblity and civic duty of voting in our elections and the importance of citizens voices being heard. The audience of this article are the people of the United States of America. It can promote the number of registered voters by leaving the audience with a call to action.  The author, Katie Reilly, seems to consider the idea of an increase of voter registration as a positive and quotes Brian Miller, the executive director of the nonprofit, VOTE. This article is important to show that our democratic government is the best representation of us when its people vote in elections, and it is our jobs as citizens to express our opinion through our ballot because some countries don’t get the privilege to vote.

  1. I think its good that the number of voters is increasing because the more people that vote, the more our government can represent the people. I feel like some people take advantage of our right to vote in the US and forget that it's a privilege that they are allowed to. -Courtney McColley

  2. I also think this is good news. More people are letting their voices be heard and that will impact the outcome in a positive way.
